Rohana Kudus

Rohana Kudus (December 20, 1884 - August 17, 1972) was the first female Indonesian journalist, founder of the Sunting Melayu newspaper, and an activist for women's emancipation.

Early life

Rohana was born in village of Koto Gadang, Agam the hinterland of West Sumatra. Her father Mohammad Rasjad Maharaja Soetan was an advisor to the Sultan of Deli. Rohana was the Sutan Sjahrir's old sister and also Agus Salim's cousin. Rohana was clever, even though she did not receive formal education. When 24 years old, Rohana got married with Abdul Kudus, the notary and activist. Abdul Kudus always supported Rohana's activity and helpful to people developing.[1]

Woman Spirit

Rohana has spirit to developed education in Koto Gadang. On February 11, 1911 she built the handicraft school specialized for girls, the name was Sekolah Kerajinan Amal Setia. Rohana was the multi-talent woman, she has many skills, such as writing. A year after she created the school, she printed the Malay woman newspaper, Sunting Melayu. To operated newspaper, Rohana as head of editor and assisted by Zubaidah Ratna Djuwita.[2]
